Moms Supporting Moms ... in Business

Mom Inventor Interview: Dea Viola of The Baby Flamingo Co.

Hands free towel for mommy and baby for a safe and cuddly experience! From Birth and Up.

When (month and year) did you have your "aha" moment that became the basis for your business?

May-06

Describe your moment, the problem you solved, or reason for starting your business.

Nothing fancy. I just loved my product and I was open to trying to selling to others. I was a lot more relaxed during bath time with my younger children than I was 24 years ago with my oldest. Why not share the concept with other moms out there?

How did you come up with the name of your product?

Just watching the nurses swaddle my babies at the hospital made me think of a little taco! ;O)

What were you doing prior to starting your own business?

Being a busy mom, teaching music and performing with a rock band. I still do all of those things.

How did your spouse or family react to the idea of you having your own business? Do they participate?

I have a lot of support but I also keep it a realistic experience for us all. I never put my company before my family.

How long was it from the time you had your idea until you had your first sale?

2 years

What skills from being a mom or from your previous work helped you in your business?

The skill of being open and flexible with the unexpected and unknown. Without a business background I encountered a lot of that.

What has been your biggest challenge in business so far? How did you overcome it?

Not sure how to categorize it because all of my challenges have led me to successes.

What are some of your favorite business tools and/or resources?

Social networking.

What tricks or traps did you discover in your business journey that you would caution other moms to avoid?

Still learning about that!

Who do you look up to, follow and/or admire in business? Why?

Basically I admire all of the corageous moms out there who are doing it all. It is not an easy job...

If you were mentoring a mom starting her business or developing her idea, what advice would you give her? What steps would you recommend?

Do one thing everyday, no matter how small. That's 30 things at the end of a month and 365 things towards your goal at the end of the year, but mainly remember you cannot do everything everyday!

When you get time to yourself (if you ever do), what do you like to do that is unrelated to your kids or your business?

I am the luckiest woman around, I sing in a Rock n Roll Band and I love it!!!! I also volunteer my time to help others at a Church and I work with an organization that helps communities around the world!
